📌 What’s Going On
Beginning in the 2025–2026 school year, the Richmond school district has made the choice to remove the PLT system as students know it, and all secondary schools will move PLT to the second period of the day. The new standard that the Richmond School District is pushing upon all students is a 60-minute block between Blocks A and B. Students will have to work within a classroom for the duration of the block and will not be able to work elsewhere.
❓ Why It’s Happening
A few parents, having seen their children not using PLT as intended, complained to the school district — leading to a review. This is unfair to students who use their PLT for legitimate academic or wellness reasons.
💡 Why PLT Matters to Students
PLT empowers students to focus on their specific needs — from academic support to mental well-being. Students can meet with teachers, study quietly, see counselors, or manage their time effectively.
Removing PLT would hurt students’ academic performance and mental health. For many, it’s also a buffer to avoid lateness due to transit and rush hour.
✅ Our Propositions
We believe PLT should remain flexible. Our proposals include:
- Maintain PLT in its current format
- Standardize 100-minute PLT schedules across schools
- Include students, staff, and families in redesign discussions
